What is Teeth Grinding
Excessive grinding of the teeth or clenching of the jaw. This condition can affect adults and children, and can occur during day or night. Some people don't have any symptoms. Others may experience headaches, jaw pain, tooth pain, or dental problems.
Why Do People Grind Their Teeth
Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (also called bruxism) is often related to stress or anxiety. It does not always cause symptoms, but some people get facial pain and headaches, and it can wear down your teeth over time. Most people who grind their teeth and clench their jaw are not aware they're doing it.
What Causes Teeth Grinding During The Night
Awake teeth grinding may be due to emotions such as anxiety, stress, anger, frustration or tension. Or it may be a coping strategy or a habit during deep concentration. Sleep bruxism may be a sleep-related chewing activity associated with arousals during sleep.
Do Bite Guards Work Against Teeth Grinding
They're no more effective than mouth guards in reducing the symptoms of teeth grinding. But they're more expensive, as they last for several years, whereas mouth guards usually only last for less than a year. You'll usually have to pay for a custom-made dental appliance.
