First Dental Visit | Things to Know

Your first dental visit is an important step toward maintaining good oral health. Here’s what to expect and what you should be aware of:

🦷 What to Expect During Your First Visit

  1. Medical & Dental History Review

    • You'll fill out a form or go over your health history, medications, and any dental concerns (like sensitivity, pain, or anxiety).

    • Be honest about any conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart issues) that could affect treatment.

  2. X-rays (if needed)

    • Most first visits include dental X-rays to check for decay, bone loss, or other hidden issues.

  3. Dental Exam

    • The dentist will check your teeth, gums, jaw, bite, and look for signs of cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer.

    • They may also evaluate any existing dental work (like fillings or crowns).

  4. *Professional Cleaning (Depending on dental history and patient age)

    • A dental hygienist may clean your teeth to remove plaque, tartar, and stains.

    • They might polish your teeth and apply fluoride.

Things to Be Aware Of

  • Insurance or Payment Info: Bring your dental insurance card or be ready to ask about payment options (especially if you're uninsured—many offices offer discount plans).

  • Medications: Bring a list of all medications you're taking.

  • Dental Anxiety: If you're nervous, let the dental team know. Many offices offer comfort options (music, sedation, etc.).

  • Questions: Bring a list of any concerns you have (e.g., tooth sensitivity, grinding, cosmetic options).

  • Timing: First visits usually take a bit longer—expect 60–90 minutes, especially if a cleaning is scheduled along with your comprehensive new patient exam.

🪥 Tips to Prepare

  • Brush and floss beforehand—but don’t stress if your teeth aren’t perfect.

  • Arrive early to handle paperwork.

  • Avoid caffeine if you're anxious.

  • Eat a light meal before (you may not want to eat right after a fluoride treatment).

🌟 What Happens Next?

  • Based on your oral health, your dentist may recommend a treatment plan.

  • You’ll likely be scheduled for a follow-up cleaning every 6 months, depending on the health of your bone and gums.

Dental Work | Importance of Routine Dental Care | Preventative Dental Care

Importance of Routine Dental Care  When I was in my 30s and a dentist told me I needed a few crowns , I decided to skip the expensive devices because of my meager paycheck. Besides, my teeth weren't hurting. Years later, I am paying the price in pain and costlier dental work . One of the damaged teeth that needed a crown distorted my bite, making a minor jaw-joint problem even worse. Unfortunately I'm far from alone. The price of dental care is steep for many people financially, physically and even socially, according to Marko Vujicic, chief economist and vice president of the Health Policy Institute at the American Dental Association. Vujicic said that the  majority of emergency room dental visits  were for infections that could be handled in a dentist's office. Overall, emergency room dental visits cost $1.9 billion yearly, 40 percent of which is public money, according to his institute's analysis of data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quali...
