 When William Jennings Bryan came to Rochester, Indiana during the 1896 campaign, the atmosphere would have felt electric. America was in the middle of one of the most bitter economic and political fights in its history following the Panic of 1893 — a devastating depression that hit farmers, laborers, and small-town America especially hard.
