Tariffs Impacting The Dental Industry | Specific Dental Office Examples

Dental office products have experienced notable price increases since the implementation of recent tariffs, particularly those affecting imports from China, Canada, and Mexico. These tariffs have disrupted supply chains and escalated costs for essential dental supplies and equipment.

📈 Specific Price Increases

  • Dental Equipment: Items such as chairs, sterilizers, and digital scanners have seen price hikes ranging from 10% to 25%. For instance, a CBCT scanner that previously cost $50,000 might now be priced between $55,000 and $62,500 due to the new tariffs.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Consumables: Supplies like gloves, masks, and gowns have become more expensive, with some products experiencing cost increases of 10% to 30%, depending on their country of origin and supply chain factors.

  • Dental Implants and Restorative Materials: Procedures involving implants and materials like zirconia have become costlier. For example, a $2,000 implant procedure could now cost approximately $2,500, reflecting a 25% increase in material costs. **Thankfully we (Ladd Dental Group) use BioHorizons Implant System, and they are 100% sourced and produces here in the United States, along with most other dental products and materials that we purchase and utilize through Patterson Dental.

💰 Impact on Dental Practices

  • Increased Operational Costs: Dental practices are facing higher expenses for both equipment and daily supplies. This financial strain is particularly challenging for small to mid-sized practices that may have limited resources to absorb these additional costs.

  • Delayed Equipment Upgrades: Due to increased prices, some practices are postponing investments in new technology and equipment, potentially affecting the quality and efficiency of patient care.

Product Category Typical Price Increase Notes
Dental chairs & operatory units 10–20% Imported components (motors, electronics) hit by tariffs
CBCT & intraoral scanners 10–25% High-tech equipment with Chinese parts most affected
Gloves (nitrile/latex) 15–30% Particularly sensitive to tariffs and supply chain issues
Surgical masks & PPE 10–25% Prices spiked during COVID, and tariffs have kept them high
Implants & zirconia crowns ~20–25% Lab and material costs rising with imports
Sterilization equipment 10–15% Many autoclaves and sensors are assembled overseas

The recent tariffs imposed on imported construction materials have also significantly impacted the cost of dental office build-outs in the United States. Dental practices planning new constructions or renovations are experiencing notable increases in expenses due to higher prices for essential building materials.

📈 Estimated Cost Increases

  • Overall Construction Costs: Industry analyses estimate that the 2025 tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico alone will raise the cost of imported construction materials by $3–4 billion. This could translate to an approximate 4%–6% increase in overall project costs for dental office build-outs.

  • Steel and Aluminum: Tariffs have led to a 10%–18% increase in steel prices and a 12%–14% rise in aluminum costs, directly affecting expenses for structural components and dental cabinetry .

  • Lumber and Drywall: With 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, materials like lumber and drywall have become more expensive, contributing to the overall rise in construction costs.

🏗️ Impact on Dental Office Build-Outs

  • Budget Adjustments: Practices are facing increased budgets for new constructions and renovations, with some projects experiencing cost overruns due to the higher prices of imported materials.

  • Project Delays: The uncertainty and unpredictability of further tariff changes have caused many developers and contractors to adopt a more conservative approach, delaying projects in hopes that tariffs might be reversed.

  • Scope Reduction: To manage costs, some dental practices are reducing the scope of their build-outs, opting for smaller spaces or fewer high-end finishes.

The recent tariffs have already begun impacting the dental industry, especially since the U.S. Trade Representative’s reinstatement and expansion of tariffs on Chinese-made goods (including medical and dental equipment) was reaffirmed in 2024 and early 2025. The practices most immediately affected are those in the middle of equipment purchases, new builds, or expanding services that rely on imported components.

Dental Work | Importance of Routine Dental Care | Preventative Dental Care

Importance of Routine Dental Care  When I was in my 30s and a dentist told me I needed a few crowns , I decided to skip the expensive devices because of my meager paycheck. Besides, my teeth weren't hurting. Years later, I am paying the price in pain and costlier dental work . One of the damaged teeth that needed a crown distorted my bite, making a minor jaw-joint problem even worse. Unfortunately I'm far from alone. The price of dental care is steep for many people financially, physically and even socially, according to Marko Vujicic, chief economist and vice president of the Health Policy Institute at the American Dental Association. Vujicic said that the  majority of emergency room dental visits  were for infections that could be handled in a dentist's office. Overall, emergency room dental visits cost $1.9 billion yearly, 40 percent of which is public money, according to his institute's analysis of data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quali...
