Rush County Courthouse | Rushville Indiana History

In the heart of downtown Rushville stands one of Indiana’s most beautiful and historic landmarks — the iconic Rush County Courthouse. Towering above the city square with its magnificent clock tower, stone exterior, and timeless architecture, the courthouse is far more than just a government building. It is a symbol of the pride, resilience, and character that has defined Rush County for generations.

For anyone who has driven through Rushville, it is nearly impossible to miss the courthouse rising above the surrounding streets. It serves as both the physical and symbolic center of the community — a reminder that small towns often carry some of the richest history in America.

The current Rush County Courthouse was constructed in 1896 and designed by the architectural firm A.W. Rush & Sons of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the structure features rock-faced stone, dramatic arches, ornate detailing, and a stunning 196-foot clock tower that still defines the Rushville skyline today.

What makes the courthouse especially remarkable is the craftsmanship that went into its construction. Historical accounts describe Italian mosaic tile flooring, marble staircases, stained-glass windows, oak woodwork, and intricate interior details that reflected the community’s ambition and optimism during the late 1800s. When the cornerstone was laid, schools and factories reportedly closed so the entire town could participate in the celebration — a testament to just how meaningful this building was to the people of Rush County.

But the story of the courthouse is really the story of Rushville itself.

Rush County was established in 1822 and named after Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Rushville quickly became the county seat and developed into an important hub for agriculture, commerce, and transportation in eastern Indiana. Early settlers built schools, mills, churches, and businesses that created the foundation for the thriving community that still exists today.

Over the decades, the courthouse has witnessed generations of history unfold around it. It has stood through wars, economic booms and recessions, presidential campaigns, technological revolutions, and countless moments in the daily lives of local families. Leaders, farmers, business owners, teachers, and neighbors have all walked through its doors. It has remained a steady presence while the world around it continually changed.

Rushville itself has produced remarkable individuals and stories throughout Indiana history. From presidential candidate Wendell Willkie to racing legend Tony Stewart, Rush County has consistently demonstrated that greatness can emerge from small-town America.

What is perhaps most inspiring about the Rush County Courthouse is what it represents today.

In a world that often moves too quickly, historic buildings like this remind us of the importance of legacy, craftsmanship, and community identity. They remind us that the generations before us believed in building things that would last. They invested in beauty. They invested in permanence. They invested in places that would serve people long after they themselves were gone.

There is an important lesson in that for organizations and businesses today.

At LADD Dental Group, we often talk about building something bigger than ourselves — creating a lasting culture centered on relationships, service, excellence, and community investment. The Rush County Courthouse stands as a perfect example of what long-term thinking looks like. The people who built it were not focused only on immediate needs; they were building a symbol for future generations.

That same mindset applies to healthcare, leadership, and community engagement.

Great organizations are not built overnight. They are built intentionally over decades through trust, consistency, and commitment to serving others well. Just as the courthouse has become a cornerstone of Rush County, strong businesses and healthcare organizations become anchors in their communities when they prioritize people over short-term success.

The courthouse also reminds us that beauty and excellence matter. Whether it is architecture, dentistry, leadership, or patient care, details matter. Pride in craftsmanship matters. The willingness to do things the right way — even when it requires more effort — leaves a lasting impact.

Today, the Rush County Courthouse continues to stand proudly as one of Indiana’s architectural treasures. For residents, it is a familiar landmark. For visitors, it is a breathtaking reminder of Indiana’s rich history. And for communities like ours, it serves as inspiration to continue building organizations and relationships that can stand the test of time.

Dental Work | Importance of Routine Dental Care | Preventative Dental Care

Importance of Routine Dental Care  When I was in my 30s and a dentist told me I needed a few crowns , I decided to skip the expensive devices because of my meager paycheck. Besides, my teeth weren't hurting. Years later, I am paying the price in pain and costlier dental work . One of the damaged teeth that needed a crown distorted my bite, making a minor jaw-joint problem even worse. Unfortunately I'm far from alone. The price of dental care is steep for many people financially, physically and even socially, according to Marko Vujicic, chief economist and vice president of the Health Policy Institute at the American Dental Association. Vujicic said that the  majority of emergency room dental visits  were for infections that could be handled in a dentist's office. Overall, emergency room dental visits cost $1.9 billion yearly, 40 percent of which is public money, according to his institute's analysis of data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quali...
