Recently, we had the opportunity to learn about the Gorge Powerhouse in Washington, and it was a great reminder that some of the most valuable lessons in business can come from places far outside of dentistry.
Built in 1924 as part of the Skagit Hydroelectric Project, the Gorge Powerhouse has been producing power for more than 100 years. What makes it remarkable isn't simply the technology or the scale of the facility. It's the combination of people, systems, infrastructure, innovation and a clear purpose that has allowed it to continue serving its mission for generations.
And as we look at the future of LADD Dental Group, there are several lessons from the Gorge Powerhouse that we believe we can incorporate into our own organization.
Build Something That Can Outlast You
One of the most impressive things about Gorge Powerhouse is its longevity.
The original facility was constructed nearly 100 years ago, yet it has continued operating while technology, equipment and the surrounding community have evolved. The powerhouse itself has also been expanded and modernized over the years.
That is something we think about a lot at LADD.
Our goal isn't simply to build successful dental practices today. We want to build an organization that can serve Indiana families for generations.
LADD Dental Group began with Dr. John Ladd in 1978, and our responsibility is to continue building upon that foundation. Every dentist we mentor, every team member we develop and every patient relationship we create becomes part of something bigger than any individual practice.
We want to build a dental organization that our future generations will be proud to inherit.
Great Systems Allow Great People to Perform
A powerhouse doesn't generate electricity because of one person pushing a button. It works because hundreds of interconnected systems operate together.
The same is true in dentistry.
At LADD, our dentists, hygienists, assistants, front-office teams, managers, leadership and support teams all have different responsibilities. But when those pieces work together, something much more powerful happens.
Our goal should be to create systems that make it easier for our people to succeed.
That means investing in technology, training, communication, clinical education, leadership development and operational processes.
It means making sure our dentists can focus on dentistry and patient relationships while our organization provides the infrastructure and support necessary for them to thrive.
Don't Be Afraid to Modernize
Perhaps one of the biggest lessons from Gorge Powerhouse is that longevity doesn't mean staying the same.
The facility has maintained its original purpose while continually adapting its technology and equipment. Over the decades, improvements have been made to keep the facility operating effectively and safely.
That is exactly the mindset we want at LADD.
We respect the traditions and principles that built our organization, but we also have to be willing to embrace the future.
Artificial intelligence, digital dentistry, clear aligners, improved patient communication, modern imaging and new clinical technologies are changing dentistry.
We don't adopt technology simply because it is new.
We adopt it when it can make our patients' experience better, help our doctors provide better care, or make our teams more effective.
Keep Improving
Perhaps the biggest lesson is that great organizations never stop improving.
The Gorge Powerhouse has been operating for more than a century, but that doesn't mean the work is finished. New equipment, modernization projects and improvements continue to be considered and implemented.
We want LADD to have that same mindset.
We don't want to become comfortable simply because something is working today.
We want to constantly ask:
How can we take better care of our patients?
How can we make our doctors better?
How can we develop our team members?
How can we improve our systems?
How can we use technology to make dentistry better?
How can we become an even better community partner?
Those questions should never stop.
Our Own Powerhouse
The Gorge Powerhouse reminded us that the most successful organizations are built on more than technology or buildings.
And our mission — family serving families — is the energy that brings everything together.
We are incredibly grateful for everything that has been built at LADD Dental Group over the past 48 years. But we're even more excited about what comes next.
