Why a Chief Clinical Officer Matters at LADD Dental Group — And Why We’re So Grateful to Welcome Dr. Greg Velligan

At LADD Dental Group, we have always believed that dentistry is about much more than teeth.

It is about people. It is about families. It is about relationships, trust, mentorship and making sure every patient who walks through our doors feels cared for.

As a family-run dental organization, we have worked hard to build an environment where our doctors and clinical teams can grow while keeping the patient at the center of everything we do. That is why we are so grateful and excited to welcome Dr. Greg Velligan as our new Chief Clinical Officer.

Dr. Velligan officially joins the LADD family on September 21, 2026, bringing 36 years of experience across clinical dentistry, dental education and multi-site dental operations.

His experience gives LADD another opportunity to strengthen something we have always considered incredibly important: supporting our providers and clinical teams.

What Does a Chief Clinical Officer Do?

In a dental organization, the Chief Clinical Officer serves as a bridge between the clinical teams and the organization’s leadership.

While operational leaders focus on areas such as business operations, finance, marketing, technology and growth, the Chief Clinical Officer provides a dedicated voice for the clinical side of the organization.

At LADD, that means helping make sure our doctors and clinical teams have the support, resources, mentorship and systems they need to provide excellent patient care.

A CCO can help with areas such as:

  • Clinical standards and consistency
  • Provider mentorship and development
  • Continuing education
  • Clinical technology and innovation
  • Treatment planning and patient care
  • Provider engagement and communication
  • Recruiting and onboarding doctors
  • Supporting clinical leadership
  • Identifying opportunities to improve the patient experience
  • Helping clinical teams navigate the challenges of modern dentistry

But perhaps most importantly, a Chief Clinical Officer gives our providers a voice at the leadership table.

Keeping the Provider at the Center

One of the things that attracted us to Dr. Velligan is the breadth of his experience.

He has spent decades on the clinical side of dentistry. He has owned a practice, worked in clinical practice, been involved in dental education and served in multi-site dental leadership.

He has also served as a Chief Clinical Officer for a DSO with more than 15 locations.

That perspective is incredibly valuable.

Dr. Velligan understands what it is like to sit in the operatory and take care of patients. He understands the responsibility doctors carry every day. He understands the importance of clinical autonomy, mentorship, continuing education and having the right people and systems around you.

That experience allows him to approach leadership not simply from an organizational perspective, but from the perspective of someone who has lived the life of a dental provider.

A Mentor for Our Doctors

At LADD, we don't want our doctors to simply come to work, treat patients and go home.

We want them to have opportunities to learn, grow, mentor others and build a long-term career in dentistry.

That is one of the reasons we are particularly excited about Dr. Velligan's role.

His background in dental education and clinical leadership creates an opportunity to strengthen mentorship throughout our organization.

Whether it is a young doctor looking for guidance, an experienced provider who wants to expand their clinical skills, or a doctor who is interested in taking on additional leadership responsibilities, we want LADD to be a place where those opportunities exist.

We believe some of the best learning in dentistry happens when experienced clinicians are willing to share what they have learned with the next generation.

36 Years of Experience to Share

Dr. Velligan's professional background is incredibly diverse.

Over the course of 36 years in dentistry, he has been involved in:

Clinical Practice
Understanding firsthand the day-to-day responsibility of caring for patients.

Dental Education
Helping develop and teach the next generation of dental professionals.

Multi-Site Operations
Understanding the opportunities and challenges that come with supporting providers across multiple locations.

Clinical Leadership
Helping establish clinical direction while supporting doctors and their teams.

Most recently, Dr. Velligan served as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at Indiana University School of Dentistry and as an Enterprise Dental Director for CareSource, where he was involved in clinical oversight and utilization management leadership across multiple states.

That combination of experiences is something we believe can bring tremendous value to LADD.

Why This Matters to Our Patients

Ultimately, the reason we are investing in clinical leadership is simple:

Our patients.

When our doctors have access to strong mentorship, continuing education, clinical leadership and organizational support, our patients benefit.

When our clinical teams have the resources they need, our patients benefit.

When we continually evaluate how we can improve the patient experience, our patients benefit.

And when experienced dentists help mentor the next generation of providers, the entire LADD family becomes stronger.

Our goal isn't simply to grow the number of locations we have.

Our goal is to build a strong, sustainable family of dental practices where great people can provide great care to the communities we are privileged to serve.

Welcome to the LADD Family, Dr. Velligan!

For our family, welcoming someone into LADD means more than adding another member to an organizational chart.

It means welcoming someone into a family.

We are incredibly grateful that Dr. Greg Velligan has chosen to become part of ours.

We are excited about the experience, mentorship and clinical perspective he will bring to our doctors, hygienists, assistants and entire clinical family.

Most importantly, we are excited about what his leadership can mean for the families who trust us with their dental care.

For more than four decades, LADD Dental Group has believed in "family serving families."

We believe Dr. Velligan's addition to our leadership team will help us continue that tradition for many years to come.

Welcome to the LADD family, Dr. Greg Velligan!

We are grateful to have you with us, and we can't wait to see what we can accomplish together.

2026 Dental Office Data | Struggling Performance Continues

Over the past decade, the dental industry experienced an unprecedented wave of consolidation. Private equity capital flowed into the profession, Dental Service Organizations (DSOs) expanded rapidly, and large multi-location platforms became a major force in the market. Recently, however, two major organizations— Dental Care Alliance and Affordable Care —have reportedly been taken over by their lenders following financial restructuring challenges. For many in the profession, this raises an important question: What does this mean for the future of dentistry ? The answer is nuanced, but it may signal a turning point for how dental organizations are built and financed going forward. The End of the “Growth at Any Cost” Era For many DSOs, the growth strategy of the past decade was simple: acquire as many practices as possible as quickly as possible. Low interest rates and strong investor appetite made this strategy viable. Debt financing allowed organizations to purchase pract...

Affordable Care Restructure | 2026 Dental Industry Impacts

The convergence of Affordable Care’s restructuring and broader financial strain across large DSOs is more than an isolated credit event — it’s a signal of structural pressure in the dental industry. Below is a strategic, operator-level view of the impacts likely to unfold. 1) Capital structure stress → Slower DSO expansion & recap cycles Affordable Care’s restructuring is largely debt-driven: The company is working with turnaround advisers after a $2.7B leveraged buyout left it with expensive floating-rate debt. Rising interest rates materially increased debt service costs. This dynamic is industry-wide: Many DSOs and small groups financed growth with variable debt that has jumped from ~4% to 10%+ interest costs. Some platforms have been unable to recapitalize amid economic uncertainty. Impacts Fewer aggressive roll-ups and de novo expansions Lower EBITDA multiples on acquisitions More minority recap deals vs. full exits Delayed liquidity e...
